In brief: Argentine manufacturing and construction recover slowly in July

* Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) has published the July figures for activity in the manufacturing and construction sectors, with both beginning to slowly recover following the historic falls registered at the onset of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. July’s construction activity indicator (Isac) recorded a 12.9% fall compared with the same month in 2019, but was up 6.9% on activity in June, and a long way from the record 75.6% year-on-year collapse registered in April. Meanwhile, July’s industrial production index (IPI) for manufacturing saw a 6.9% drop compared with July 2019, but a 2.1% increase compared with June, and a strong improvement on the record 33.5% downturn in April. Over the first seven months of 2020, the Isac fell by 34%, while the manufacturing IPI accumulated losses of 13.4%.
