ECUADOR: Electoral exclusion confirmed for Correa

Within the space of five months, three separate courts have deemed Ecuador’s former president Rafael Correa (2007-2017) to have been guilty of bribery during his time in office [WR-20-14]. Following the rejection on 7 September of his final appeal, made in the court of cassation, Correa condemned the decision, which he said had been “made in record time”, as “an attack on democracy”, but was forced to accept that his hopes of running as a vice-presidential candidate in next February’s presidential elections are over.
