EL SALVADOR: Funes may devote 6,500 more troops to policing

In just under a month President Mauricio Funes has shifted from envisaging the deployment of a few hundred more troops alongside the police [SSR-09-09] to increasing their numbers more than fourfold. This decision came only days after figures released by the police showed that the number of homicides, after a significant decline over the past couple of years, had risen again in 2009, and shortly before an opinion survey showed a sharp increase in the public's fear of becoming victims of crime.
