In brief: Brazil’s labour court orders end of Correios strike

* Brazil’s superior labour court (TST) has ruled that a strike by workers from the Correios national postal service, begun on 17 August in protest of the effective termination of a collective labour agreement, amongst other issues, was not abusive – this means striking workers will receive at least some compensation. Following unsuccessful negotiations between the Fentect postal workers’ union and the Correios, the TST has ordered that a total of 29 clauses of the collective labour agreement be reinstated (only nine of which Correios had agreed to), including a 2.6% adjustment in salaries. Correios, described as intransigent in the negotiations by both the Fentect and the TST, had argued that reinstating the 70 overturned clauses in the agreement was financially unviable, coming at a cost of R$294m (US$54.3m). The TST has also ordered that Correios workers go back to work today (22 September) or risk a R$100,000 fine per day. The Fentect has said it will discuss the TST ruling today before taking a collective decision on it.
