* Cuba’s deputy prime minister, Ricardo Cabrisas, has warned that the country is finding it difficult to “meet obligations” to Russia, as trade is “practically paralysed” due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and the US embargo on Cuba, according to a report by Spanish newswire EFE, citing the Russian senate’s press office. The report did not provide further details regarding the obligations in question. According to Cuba’s state mouthpiece Granma, Cabrisas is visiting Russia from 21-29 September to “assess the state of economic, trade, financial and cooperation relations” between the two countries. In a meeting with Valentina Matviyenko, the speaker of the Russian federal assembly’s federation council, Cabrisas said Cuba’s economy and bilateral economic relations are affected by the “intensification of the criminal economic, commercial and financial blockade” from the US, as well as by the pandemic. A Cuban government press release stated that both sides have ratified the will to continue strengthening bilateral relations, while Matviyenko said the visit “shows that our Cuban friends seek to maintain dialogue with Russia and are interested in boosting relations between the two countries"
