The general elections in Honduras, which were called a month before
President Manuel Zelaya was removed from office, went ahead as scheduled on 29
November, in a surprisingly calm atmosphere and with a turnout greater than that
of 2005. The outcome reflected what the polls had been saying from long before
the campaigning began: Porfirio Lobo, of the opposition Partido Nacional (PN),
won comfortably. The only remaining question is how deep and lasting will be the
