Jochy Vicente, has presented the government’s proposed 2021 budget which is for RD$1.04trn (US$17.75bn), although the full details have yet to be publicly revealed. The 2020 budget was modified in June by the previous administration led by former president,
Danilo Medina (2012-2020), to address the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic which is expected to result in the country’s GDP contracting by 5.3% in 2020. The modification assigned a further RD$151bn, bringing the total 2020 budget to RD$1trn. Earlier this month President
Luis Abinader, who took office on 16 August, approved an additional RD$202bn in spending. The proposed 2021 budget now goes to the legislature for approval.
