* Ecuador’s President
Lenín Moreno has announced the appointment of
Mauricio Pozo as the country’s new economy & finance minister, following the resignation of
Richard Martínez from the role. Pozo previously served as economy & finance minister between 2003-2004 under former president
Lucio Gutiérrez (2003-2005) and was a vice presidential candidate in 2017 for the centre-right Partido Social Cristiano (PSC). Speaking about his appointment, Pozo acknowledged that he faces
“a short period” in office, with a new government due to be elected in February 2021, but noted that he has
“some important goals to achieve” – to
“strengthen the economic programme and dollarisation”, to
“accelerate economic recovery and employment”, and above all to
“promote national dialogue” in order to build a consensus on the reform agenda agreed by the Moreno administration with the International Monetary Fund (IMF),
Martínez’s final act. One of Moreno’s closest allies in government, and the chief architect of two IMF agreements and a
sovereign debt restructuring deal that have polarised the Ecuadorean public, Martínez leaves to take up the role of vice president for countries at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), offered to him by newly-elected IDB president
