Democracy and human rights

For virtually the entire post-World War II period, successive US governments have formally supported democracy and human rights in Latin America. However, in practice and for motives of political expediency, Washington has a long record of supporting anti-democratic and dictatorial regimes and has been complicit in numerous military coups d’état. For many decades the logic of the Cold War led US administrations to support right-wing military dictatorships, prioritising their anti-communist credentials over and above respect for democracy and human rights.
