EL SALVADOR: Bukele’s bellicose tactics

President Nayib Bukele launched an intemperate Twitter attack on the magistrates sitting on El Salvador’s constitutional chamber of the supreme court (CSJ) on 12 October. Bukele not only accused the magistrates of being “against the government” but also impugned their integrity, branding them “corrupt sell outs”. Bukele’s comments, which followed three separate resolutions issued by the judges, heightened concerns about his respect for the rule of law, and the untrammelled power he could soon enjoy if his Nuevas Ideas party gains a majority in the legislative assembly in elections scheduled for 28 February 2021.
