Gonzalo Quiroga has reported that the interim government expects inflation to be at 1.7% by the end of the year, and that the country’s economy will contract by a total of 7.7% in 2020 as a whole. Both figures have been substantially affected by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, with annual inflation falling to a 10-year low of 0.46% in September, and the economy contracting by 11% in the first half of the year, according to Quiroga. The revised estimates therefore reflect a prediction that the country’s economy has begun to recover, and that domestic consumption will start to pick up before the end of the year, but that the impact of the pandemic will nonetheless continue to be felt strongly in Bolivia.
