The Brazilian government has taken steps towards negotiating a free trade agreement (FTA) with the US this week. They signed bilateral trade cooperation and promotion agreements setting the foundations for FTA negotiations. President Jair Bolsonaro has always boasted of having a close affinity with his US peer Donald Trump and made forging closer ties with the US a key foreign policy objective after assuming office in January 2019. This has produced few concrete benefits for Brazil.
