The all-conquering left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) was halted in its tracks on 18 October. In the only elections to be held in Mexico this year, ahead of a blockbuster electoral year in 2021, the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) demonstrated that it remains a force to be reckoned with, at least at a local level. The PRI secured a resounding majority in the state legislature in Coahuila and won all of the main municipal elections in the state of Hidalgo. For Morena, seeking to supplant the PRI’s hegemony at all levels of government, the defeats were a notable setback, with several plausible causes, including a bitter internal leadership struggle and the slightly fading lustre of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
