* The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has released two reviews, on Brazil’s digital transformation and its telecommunications & broadcasting sector, in which it stresses that Brazil should do more to
“reduce the country’s digital divide and embrace digital technologies”, a strategy which would also contribute to the recovery from the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
“Digital economies are the backbone of today’s economies, and digital tools and connectivity are essential in helping businesses and people to weather the Covid-19 crisis,” OECD secretary-general
Angel Gurría said. The OECD’s key recommendations for Brazil include: to continue improving digital skills through tax incentives for businesses to invest in technology and training, support for research & development, and funding for STEM students; to overhaul and harmonise taxes in the communications sector; to create one independent regulator to oversee both communication and broadcasting; to improve access to fast internet; and to
“design the upcoming auction for 5G spectrum in a way that ensures a competitive market”. Brazil has been coming under
increasing pressure from the US to exclude Chinese telecoms giant Huawei from its 5G spectrum auction, due to be held next year.
