Political opposition groups in Nicaragua such as Alianza Cívica por la Justicia y la Democracia (ACJD) are denouncing a fresh wave of repression by the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government led by President Daniel Ortega ahead of the November 2021 general election. This includes new legislative bills which ACJD and other groups warn would curtail civil and political liberties. This threat has already prompted further reprisals from the international community which has already applied pressure on the government to end the crackdown which it began in April 2018 on opponents, who it accuses of attempting to stage a coup.
