In brief: Brazil’s industrial sector recoups pandemic losses

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures on the industrial sector, according to which industrial production expanded by 2.6% in September compared with August, and by 3.4% year-on-year. This is the first positive year-on-year variation after 10 months of negative results, and the fifth consecutive result of monthly growth. Industrial production has recouped the losses accumulated in March and April, as activity ground to a halt due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, and now finds itself 0.2% above pre-pandemic February levels. Activity in the industrial sector has accumulated losses of -7.2% in the first nine months of the year, and a negative result of -5.5% in the 12 months to September.
