*Colombia’s central bank (Banrep) has reported that as of August, the country’s external debt had reached US$150.5bn (around 53% of GDP), representing a new record high, having increased by almost US$15bn in the previous 12 months. According to Banrep, US$83.6bn of this total is public debt, while Colombia’s private debt is currently worth US$66.9bn. Banrep recently projected that the country’s economy will contract by 7.6% in 2020, but acknowledged that this contraction could be deeper if a second wave of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic forces the return of restrictions on certain economic activities.
