*Colombia’s comptroller general’s office has called on state-owned oil company, Ecopetrol, to carry out modernisation works at its Barrancabermeja refinery (the largest in the country), in Santander department, which a recent report accused of breaching environmental regulations for producing 27 oil spills into the Magdalena River in the space of a year. Óscar David Rivero, who oversaw this report, claimed that Ecopetrol had failed to update its environmental contingency plan in 2019 as required by the environmental licensing authority (Anla), and that “
deficiencies in both pipes and drains” as a result of insufficient modernisation had led to recent spills. In response, Ecopetrol issued a statement claiming that the situation had been clarified with Anla earlier this year, with a US$500m investment plan for “
projects that seek to guarantee the reduction of environmental impacts” in the process of being finalised.
