In brief: Honduras think tank criticises tax exonerations

* Honduran think-tank Foro Social de la Deuda Externa de Honduras (Fosdeh) has released a new report which warns that the government’s strategy of seeking to attract investment through offering fiscal incentives has not been efficient in terms of generating economic development and growth for the country. The study cites figures from the finance ministry which show that fiscal exonerations received by companies as a mechanism for stimulating investment increased by 27.37% from L37bn (US$1.5bn) in 2017 to L46bn in 2020, equivalent to 16.3% of the state budget and which otherwise could go on public spending. According to the report, as of August 2019, 3,705 companies received exonerations – up from 1,821 in 2013.
