In brief: New train line planned for Mexico City
* Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has announced plans for a new 35km electric train line, running from Valle de Chalco – a municipality in the Estado de Mexico (Edomex), on the edge of Mexico City (CDMX) – to the Avenida Zaragoza, near the centre of the capital. López Obrador emphasised the need for a “modern transportation system” to connect the eastern part of Edomex with the city centre, and confirmed that talks had already begun with CDMX governor Claudia Sheinbaum and Edomex governor Alfredo del Mazo. López Obrador noted that this train line had been among the infrastructure projects promised in his 2018 election campaign, and reiterated his commitment to have built more than 2,000km of new railways by the time he leaves office in 2024.
