Chile: On 17 November, US President-elect
Joe Biden spoke over the phone with Chile’s President
Sebastián Piñera. According to a press release issued by Biden, he thanked Piñera for his congratulations (in response to his victory in the 3 November US presidential election) and “
expressed his strong desire to deepen the US relationship with Chile”. President-elect Biden also congratulated President Piñera on “
Chile’s recent decision to update its constitution in a manner that will lead to a stronger and more equitable democracy”, and “
further pledged to work closely with Chile to help the Americas recover from the economic and public health challenges posed by the Covid-19 [coronavirus] pandemic, strengthen hemispheric institutions, manage regional migration, and rebuild cooperation in addressing global challenges such as climate change”. President Piñera is the first leader in Latin America to speak with President-elect Biden since his victory.
