In brief: New solar panel factory funded by China unveiled in Mexico

* Solarever, the leading producer of photovoltaic panels in Mexico, has opened its third factory in the country, in the city of Tecomán, Colima state. Solarever is a Mexican company but was set up with Chinese capital; the company’s CEO, Simon Zhao, has outlined that after eight years operating in Mexico, the construction of a new factory was necessary for Solarever to expand its operations and respond to growing national and international demand for solar panels. A reported US$20m of Chinese origin were invested in the construction of the Tecomán factory, reportedly the country’s largest, although this sum will also serve for expansions in Solarever’s two other factories in Mexico, in Tepeji del Río, Hidalgo state, and Irapuato, Guanajuato state. The governor of Colima, José Ignacio Peralta, has welcomed the new factory, noting that it will boost local economic activity and investment to the state; it is expected to create 250 direct jobs in Tecomán and thousands of further indirect jobs.
