BRAZIL: Shocking death confronts country with racial violence

The brutal killing of a black man by two white supermarket security guards on the eve of Brazil’s Black Consciousness Day, which is celebrated on 20 November, prompted widespread outrage and several days of protests across the country. Although parallels with the US, where violent demonstrations erupted after the killing of George Floyd by a policeman in May, are hasty and inaccurate, the troubling incident has undoubtedly sparked a conversation on persistent racism in Brazil.
