In brief: Mercosur and EU business lobbies urge ratification of trade deal

* Business organisations from Southern Common Market (Mercosur) countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay) and the European Union (EU) have issued a joint statement calling for the urgent ratification of the Mercosur-EU free trade agreement, which was signed last year after almost two decades of negotiation. The call was made in a joint statement signed by BusinessEurope, a lobby group representing businesses in the EU and seven non-EU European countries, the Unión Industrial Argentina (UIA), the Unión Industrial Paraguaya (UIP), the Cámara de Industrias del Uruguay (CIU) and the Confederação Nacional da Indústria do Brasil (CNI). European countries – and France in particular – have been hesitating over the ratification of the deal, amid demands for stronger environmental safeguards from Mercosur country and, in particular calls for more to be done to stop deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon.
