REGION: Biden victory fans expectations

The victory of Democratic candidate Joe Biden in the 3 November US presidential election has generated expectations of a shift in US policy towards Central America away from that pursued by the current administration led by President Donald Trump, which focused on blocking illegal immigration. Here we review Biden’s plan for Central America which points to a return of the approach adopted by the previous Democratic government led by former president, Barack Obama (2009-2017), in which Biden served as vice president - namely a commitment to tackling the root causes of mass migration from Central America to the US with a focus on the so-called Northern Triangle (El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras).
