In brief: Brazil’s unemployment reaches another record high

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest unemployment figures, according to which the unemployment rate for the July-September rolling quarter stood at 14.6% – the highest figure ever recorded since the current series began in 2012. This compares with an unemployment rate of 13.3% in April-June this year, and 11.8% in July-September 2019. The employed population fell by 1.1% compared with the previous quarter, to 82.5m, with the agricultural and construction sectors the only ones to have seen an increase in employment in the third quarter of 2020. The under-employment rate has reached a record 30.3%, while the rate of employment in the informal sector has risen compared with the previous quarter, to 38.4%, a result of the relaxation of the restrictions implemented in March and April to contain the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. However, employment levels in the informal sector remain below those of 2019. The working-age population in the workforce (that is to say, employed or seeking employment) has remained broadly stable compared with the previous rolling quarter, at 96.5m, while the working-age population outside of the workforce rose by 1% to 78.6m.
