* Brazil’s national association of vehicle manufacturers (Anfavea) has released figures for the sector in November, which show that vehicle production and exports have returned to, and even exceeded, last year’s levels, but domestic sales remain low as consumers continue to feel the effects of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. According to the Anfavea, vehicle production totalled 238,200 units in November, a 0.7% increase on October and a 4.7% increase on November 2019 levels. Over the course of 2020 so far, vehicle production remains 35% below levels recorded in January-November 2019. Exports have picked up, with 44,007 units exported in November (the best monthly result since August 2018), although exports in 2020 remain overall 28.5% below 2019 levels. On the domestic market, 225,010 vehicles were sold – a 4.6% increase on domestic sales in October, but a figure 7.1% below November 2019 sales. Domestic sales in January-November 2020 were 28.1% lower than in the previous year. Anfavea president,
Luiz Carlos Moraes, has welcomed the November results as a sign of improvement in the automotive sector, but notes that challenges remain; there are notably concerns that a shortage of autoparts could paralyse production.
