US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's visit to Ecuador on 8 June
was stronger on gesture than tangible outcomes, but what the gestures signalled
was that relations between the two countries have been mending quite rapidly
after the low point reached when the US had to abandon the airbase facilities it
had enjoyed for a decade at Manta. The visit has allowed President Rafael Correa
to claim that he has achieved some progress on the vexed matter of the US base
facilities in Colombia, and that he has gained at least a hearing for some of
