BRAZIL | Crackdown on police & prison malfeasance. On 6-7 June the military police of São Paulo state rounded up 17 of its officers suspected of being members of a death squad that killed 23 people between 17 and 27 April. This raises to 22 the number of military police officers arrested as a result of the investigation into the killings that took place in the coastal Baixada Santista, apparently in revenge for the murder of an officer in the Guarujá seaside resort earlier in April.
