VENEZUELA: Guaidó seeks to salvage his position
For the third consecutive year, the January opening session of Venezuela’s national assembly (AN) looks set to deliver a significant political showdown. On 5 January 2019, opposition deputy Juan Guaidó was named AN president, providing the basis for his claim to the interim presidency of Venezuela. Exactly 12 months later, he was blocked from entering the chamber for his re-election, a clear sign of the threat he posed to the government led by Nicolás Maduro. On 5 January 2021, Guaidó has pledged to lead a protest against the installation of the new AN – controversially elected on 6 December – in what could be his last roll of the dice as leader of the Venezuelan opposition.
