CHILE: On the alert over foreign fishing fleet
A fleet of foreign, primarily China-flagged, fishing boats in the Pacific Ocean has been travelling towards Chile in recent months, having first caused a stir in Ecuador and Peru earlier this year. Some of these boats were confirmed to have entered Chile’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) on 14 December, and this incursion will reinforce calls from those who argue Chile needs a more cohesive policy to defend its maritime resources.
