DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Abinader moves on corruption pledge

President Luis Abinader has unveiled institutional reforms to address corruption and recover funds stolen from the state. This is in line with an electoral pledge to tackle corruption - a key priority for the new Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM) government, which took office in August, given public anger over the issue had been a major factor in the defeat of his predecessor Danilo Medina (2012-2020) of the Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD). Abinader’s declared plan comes amid evidence of other efforts to combat corruption, both in past and present administrations.
