US voices concern over Mexico’s national security law reform

Mexico: On 11 December US Attorney General William Barr expressed his disapproval and concern regarding the proposed reform of Mexico’s national security law, that would restrict the presence and actions of foreign security agents in Mexico. The reform bill has been approved by Mexico’s congress. In a statement, Barr commented that the US Department of Justice is “committed to working with” the Mexican government to “fight the transnational criminals who threaten both our nations”, adding that “as always, our cooperation takes place within the longstanding framework designed to address jointly our shared challenges”. But Barr added that “we are troubled” by the new legislation, which would “have the effect of making cooperation between our countries more difficult.  This would make the citizens of Mexico and the US less safe.  The passage of this legislation can only benefit the violent transnational criminal organisations and other criminals that we are jointly fighting”.
