VENEZUELA: Embarrassing focus on hidden rise of violent crime

The publication of a gruesome photograph by an opposition newspaper lured Venezuelan officialdom into getting a court to impose a pre-election gag order on media reportage of violence, only to lift its broadest provisions in the face of widespread outrage at home and abroad. This faux pas rebounded on the government by attracting worldwide attention to the fact that it has been suppressing official data which shows Venezuela rising to the top echelon of Latin America's murder league.
