MEXICO: Port security becomes new area of controversy

The decision by the government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to put the Mexican navy (Semar) in charge of administering and managing all of Mexico’s maritime ports has met with controversy. López Obrador says this would allow Semar and his government to improve security at the country’s ports, which could in turn help in the fight against drug trafficking. But the move has raised concerns about Mexico’s creeping militarisation under López Obrador. Meanwhile security experts are sceptical over whether it can succeed.
