In brief: Mexico’s vehicle production, exports and domestic sales slump in 2020

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released new figures which show total production of light vehicles (cars and vans) was 3.04m in 2020, down 20.23% on 2019 while 2.68m light vehicles were exported, down 20.85% on 2019. April and May were the worst performing months, due to nationwide restrictions to stop the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19). However, the figures also indicate signs of recovery in production and exports towards the end of the year: in December 2020, 275,081 light vehicles were exported, up 16.14% on December 2019 while 254,251 light vehicles were produced, up 18.41% on December 2020. As regards domestic sales, 105,135 light vehicles were sold in December 2020, a 19.41% drop on December 2019, while 949,353 units were sold in 2020, down 27.97% on 2019.
