DOMINICAN REPUBLIC | Drug charges against military & police. On 13 August an investigating committee recommended that 10 officers, among them two colonels, and four other members of the armed forces and the police be dismissed from their services for having committed 'grave faults' in connection with the drug-trafficking gang headed by the convicted José Figueroa Agosto. The committee did not recommend that the persons involved be brought before the civilian courts. A judge ordered the release of seven of the detainees on the grounds that their arrest had been illegal. The chief prosecutor Radhamés Jiménez has ordered an investigation into the entire proceedings.
