ARGENTINA: Covid restrictions cause political friction
President Alberto Fernández went in early and hard to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) in Argentina last March, an approach that contrasted starkly with his Brazilian peer Jair Bolsonaro. But Argentina’s well-documented economic difficulties were compounded by a long lockdown, and an incipient recovery risks being snuffed out as the Fernández administration puts forward fresh restrictions amid an uptick in Covid-19 cases and fear of the arrival of more-infectious mutant strains of the virus that are emerging elsewhere. This has put him at loggerheads with some of the country’s governors who forced him to back down this week on the imposition of a nationwide curfew.
