The director of Haiti’s electoral commission (CEP), Max Délices, has unveiled the electoral calendar for the 2021 presidential, legislative, and municipal elections, as well as a constitutional referendum. President Jovenel Moïse has faced mounting international pressure to stage the vote: legislative elections are long overdue, and he has been ruling by decree for a year after elections failed to materialise in October 2019, amid political gridlock, and the lapsing of legislators’ terms in January 2020. Délices’s announcement is controversial for various reasons, however. Some opposition leaders contest the envisaged end date for Moïse’s presidential term (which would appear to be next year).
