GUATEMALA: Justice system back under scrutiny

The office of the special prosecutor against impunity (Feci), a unit within Guatemala’s attorney general’s office (AG), last week called for a local judge, Mynor Moto, to be stripped of his immunity from prosecution to face legal action for the crimes of conspiracy to obstruct justice and breach of trust. Moto is a high-profile candidate for the constitutional court (CC) after one of its members died of coronavirus (Covid-19) last year. The charges against Moto, which have drawn an international response, come as the justice system is already under scrutiny due to the pending election of new supreme court (CSJ) justices and appellate judges, which should have been completed in 2019 but was suspended by the CC amid procedural irregularities and concerns about the calibre of candidates.
