* Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) has released the latest figures for the monthly indicator of economic activity (Emae), used as a preview of GDP growth, which show that the country’s economic activity contracted by 3.7% year-on-year in November 2020, as a result of the continued impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. This is the smallest year-on-year contraction since February 2020. The figures show that the biggest falls were in hotels & restaurants (-53.2%) and transport & communications (-18.2%), while growth was registered in financial intermediation, which was up 11.7%; wholesale; retail & repair, up 3.9%; and manufacturing, up 3.7%. The United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (Eclac) estimates that Argentina’s GDP contracted by 10.5% in 2020.
