In brief: Guatemala and Taiwan announce new MoU

* Guatemala and Taiwan have announced a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) whereby Taiwan has authorised US$60m in aid for new projects in Guatemala over the next four years. According to the document, the funds will be assigned to “support development projects agreed by both nations”, which will aim to provide assistance to the “most vulnerable populations”, although further details were not provided. In Central America, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua retain diplomatic ties with Taiwan, while Costa Rica became the first country in the sub-region to break ties with it in favour of mainland China in 2007. It has since been followed by Panama, in June 2017, and the Dominican Republic and El Salvador, both in 2018.
