No pacification in sight in Mexico
Another year, another soaring homicide figure for Mexico. Upon assuming office in December 2018, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador promised that his administration would pacify the country within six months. However, two years on and there are still no signs of this. Pacification was supposed to be achieved through a new comprehensive national security strategy that would allow the government to remove the military from the streets. But the army’s withdrawal from the streets has ostensibly been relegated as the López Obrador government has continued to rely on the military to combat organised crime. yet not even this has helped to reinforce public security and save of violence linked to organised criminal activity continues to rock the country, with thousands of murders committed every month.
