Mexico has formally assumed the rotating seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for which it was elected last year. The challenge of assuming a global leadership role while avoiding diplomatic frictions with the world’s most powerful countries during its two-year tenure ending in 2022 has now begun for the government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Whether the López Obrador administration can rise to this challenge and come out with its international reputation unscathed and potentially enhanced is very much up in the air.
