MEXICO: Behind the hype over the 'battle of Matamoros'

The Mexican government hailed it as a major blow against one of the biggest drug cartels in the country and warned that it could be followed by a short-term increase in violence. A much-read pundit dubbed it 'the battle of Matamoros' and said that it had been 'a classical model of irregular warfare'. News media across the border reported that violence was already spiking. While much remains unclear, the available facts do not fit any of these narratives.
