* Uruguay’s tourism ministry has announced the opening of calls for expression of interest for the development of a five-star hotel with a licence to operate a casino on the coast of the eastern Rocha department. Tourism Minister
Germán Cardoso declared that the project will help give Rocha department
“an added value in the diversification of its tourism offer, which is badly needed”. The intendent (governor) of Rocha,
Alejó Umpiérrez, noted that the coastal department currently lacks high-end tourism and that the development of the five-star hotel will allow it to tap into that market, despite the challenges posed to the tourism industry by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Interested parties, both national and international, have 90 days to consult the conditions established by the government for the hotel project and submit their expressions of interest, after which the tourism ministry will open a call for public bids.
