In brief: Colombia’s industrial production shows signs of recovery

* Colombia’s national statistics institute (Dane) has reported that industrial production fell by 5.4% in December 2020 compared with the same month in 2019. This brings the cumulative contraction in 2020 to 9.9%  – a reflection of the economic impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The December 2020 year-on-year figure is the smallest contraction since the start of the pandemic, however. As regards key sectors, exploitation of mining and quarries was down 20.4% in 2020 compared with 2019; manufacturing industry was down 8%; supply of electricity & gas, down 2.6%; and water collection, treatment & distribution, down 0.6%.
