In brief: Mexico’s unemployment rate improves, but stays high

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released the results of its national employment survey (Enoe) for the fourth quarter of 2020, according to which the unemployment rate was 4.6%. This is 1.2 percentage points above the unemployment rate in October-December 2019, but represents an improvement on the third quarter of 2020, when unemployment had reached 5.1%. Unemployment was higher in urban areas, with the unemployment rate across Mexico’s 39 main cities standing at 5.6%. The Enoe figures reveal that, year-on-year, the employed population fell by 2.4m to 53.3m in Q4 2020; while the underemployed population increased by 3.8m to a total 8.1m.
