Weekly Report - 18 February 2021 (WR-21-07)

President Jair Bolsonaro’s desire to be re-elected in 2022 is believed by many in Brazil to guide most of his actions and decisions. Following this logic, Bolsonaro’s alliance with the ‘centrão’ bloc in congress aims to not only facilitate his government’s legislative agenda but also to stoke divisions within the moderate right and thus undermine its efforts to organise as an opposition force to his far-right populist politics – something in which he appears to be succeeding. A weak and divided moderate right benefits Bolsonaro, who knows his chances will be improved if he faces a left-wing challenger in 2022.
