BRAZIL: Army moves in for long stay in Rio favelas

A month after its mission in the occupied shantytowns of Rio de Janeiro had been radically changed, the Brazilian army reported its first fatality and announced that drug traffickers had reappeared on the scene, while elsewhere in the city the drug gangs were said to be fortifying the 'favelas' they control in expectation of further government offensives. It is not yet clear how long the military will remain inside the occupied 'favelas'.
